Working together, the medical authorities in Pakistan and Afghanistan are making great strides in vaccinating children against polio. Only in those two countries does wild poliovirus remain endemic but because the cases of polio are largely concentrated on the countries’ shared border the medics and their partners in polio eradication
By tradition, a share of the funds raised by Rotary in Harpenden each year is allocated to the ‘President’s charity.’ Harpenden Mencap was Richard Young’s choice during his presidential year.
Back to our normal slot at the end of July, the 28th Classics on the Common, organised by Rotary in Harpenden, drew crowds in their thousands to see a spectacular array of more than 1000 classic cars, scooters and motorbikes, including the largest vehicle we’ve ever had.
Harpenden resident Fran Hocken adds her donation to the many items given by shoppers at Sainsbury’s and destined for the food bank covering Harpenden and St Albans.

Representatives of the three charities chosen by Rotary in Harpenden members to be the main beneficiaries of the funds raised by last September’s Classics on the Common receive their cheques from Rotary in Harpenden President Richard Young and Classics Event Manager Liz Jack.
Rotary in Harpenden members, along with Harpenden Lions Club members, collecting donations in aid of Ukraine refugees from travellers at Harpenden Station.
This winter’s Rotary shoeboxes not only carried toys, games, writing materials and toiletries to disadvantaged youngsters and elderly people in central and eastern Europe; they also helped to provide a £2,600 donation to a major water and sanitation project benefiting rural schools in Malawi.
