Finding a business idea and pitching it to three successful business people was the challenge set to Year 6 at High Beeches Junior School. Rotary in Harpenden provided the initial funding to teams, all of which are invited to run their businesses at this year’s school summer ‘Feastival’.

Tara wins the ‘Service above Self’ award
Tara Conway-Shah of Roundwood Park School is this year’s winner of the Bill Hewetson Memorial Prize and Rotary Young Citizen Award. The awards recognise a young person’s achievements in the spirit of the Rotary motto Service above Self.
Modular homes revive Ukrainian village
Local Rotarians pictured with one of the 124 temporary modular homes that have helped to house residents of Moshchun, a village near the Ukrainian capital, where Russian bombardment destroyed or severely damaged 70% of the buildings.
Their appeal to other Rotary clubs brought support from 12 countries including Britain. Our Ukrainian Quiz Night, held in November, raised funds for furniture and other household essentials.
Debating Competition ‘so valuable’
St George’s School won both the intermediate and the senior cups in the Harpenden heat of the Rotary Youth Speaks: A Debate competition, held at Aldwickbury Golf Club before an audience of parents and teachers.
Schools’ Choir aids Community Food Club
For nearly 30 years Rotary has been hosting A Concert for Christmas at the Methodist Church in Harpenden in aid of their President’s charity. This year Rotary in Harpenden was supporting Redbourn Community Food Club.
Classics on the Common – another great show
Once again Classics on the Common, Rotary in Harpenden’s flagship event, drew crowds in their thousands to Harpenden Common to roam about a splendid collection of classic cars, motorbikes and scooters. This year we also introduced a novelty.
In the spirit of ‘Service above Self’
This year three young people earned the Bill Hewetson Memorial Prize and Young Citizen Award. The prize and award – a token and certificate – recognise special service within the community in keeping with Rotary International’s motto, Service above Self.

EYES DOWN, EARS OPEN
Twenty-eight teams competed for the trophy in the 26th Quiz of Quizzes, held at St George’s School. By a six-point margin the Harpenden Lions Club triumphed, chalking up an 11th victory.
Demonstrating creative technology talent
A record 37 teams of four entered this year’s Rotary Technology Tournament. All secondary schools in St Albans and Harpenden are invited to come along and face the challenge of building a working model in four hours. Students then demonstrate their products to a panel of expert judges.
