Before an audience of parents and teachers, teams from Harpenden’s senior schools debated subjects of their own choice in the annual Youth Speaks: The Debate contest. Organised by Rotary in Harpenden, the event was held at Aldwickbury Park Golf Club.
St George’s School again won the senior competition for 14 to 17-year-olds, debating Animal testing should be banned. The Intermediate cup for 11 to 13-year-olds went to Aldwickbury School, who debated Anything can be considered art.
The independent judges commented on the high standard set by all the teams, each comprising proposer, opposer and chair. They also had advice for them: don’t read your presentation and speak with real passion about your subject.
Both winning teams now compete in the district heat of the competition.
