Some 19 months ago Rotary in Harpenden took on a project to raise funds to equip a new operating theatre being built at the Kyengera Women’s hospital in Wakiso, near Kampala, Uganda.  

We had the task of raising the equivalent of US$5,000 to get the $30,000+ project off the ground. 

We were spurred on by the promise of a Global Grant of £25,000 from Rotary’s own international charity, The Rotary Foundation – if we achieved that $5,000 target. This we did. Almost half was raised with the support of our schools and a local charity. The balance was generously donated by the Developing World Group of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Harpenden. 

Given the importance of the project The Rotary Foundation granted a further $9,000, bringing the total amount raised to a wonderful $39,000. 

Now, as our picture shows, the operating theatre stands ready to receive the equipment the project made possible.
